Teddy Geiger walked her first red carpet since announcing her gender transition last fall. On Tuesday, she attended the 2018 BMI Pop Awards. While Geiger has documented her journey on social media, this event marked her first official appearance.

The 29-year-old singer-songwriter has collaborated with Shawn Mendes on his hits like “Stitches,” “Mercy,” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” In October, she announced to her followers that she would be transitioning.

Geiger has posted photos on Instagram over the past few months, revealing in November that she had begun hormone replacement therapy. She also shared her pronouns and that she would be keeping her name, Teddy.

The “For You I Will (Confidence)” singer has had an outpouring of love and support from those in the industry, including from her frequent collaborator, Mendes.

“I’m so grateful to be going through this process with her because I’m learning so much from it,” he said last month in an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. Mendes also talked about the moment when he referred to Geiger as “she” without having to consciously think about it, noting that the look on her face was moving.

“I wish everyone could experience this, because if they did, there would be no questions,” he said. “There would be no ‘I don’t get it,’ no confusion about the process.”

The two are currently collaborating on Mendes’s third album.
