SINGAPORE— A 29-year-old Singaporean man who disappeared after attending a wake in Penang last Friday was discovered dead on Tuesday (12 March).

Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times identified him as Chew Wei Fung and reported that his body was found outside his car. The car had apparently plunged 45 metres deep into a ravine off Bukit Kukus near George Town.

Chew had left the wake just before midnight on Friday and communicated with friends via the WeChat mobile application as he headed home to Relau. However, contact with him was lost thereafter.

Victim identified and investigation ongoing

The State Fire and Rescue Department's northeast district zone one officer, Muzamer Mohd Salleh, said that they received a report of a car accident around 1pm on Tuesday, according to The New Straits Times.

He added that, upon arrival at the scene, the firemen found a car in the ravine and a man lying nearby, possibly thrown off from the vehicle during the accident. He was found with visible injuries and was already dead.

"We believe the accident happened several days ago and the car was just seen today." Muzamer said, confirming that Chew's body had been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Mother participated in search-and-rescue efforts

Malaysian media outlets reported that Chew's mother had participated in the search-and-rescue efforts in Penang. She was heard calling out for her son, saying, "Fung, mummy will take you back to Singapore. Fung, you heard me? Follow mummy back to Singapore. Mummy bring you home. Fung!"

This incident marks the second road accident involving a Singaporean in Malaysia in recent days. Earlier in the week, a 60-year-old man was among the casualties following a collision between a trailer lorry and a tour van in Sabah.
