Don't put your shovels away or change those tires just yet.

Residents of northeastern Newfoundland and the northern Avalon Peninsula could be in for a messy Thursday evening, as Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement that mentions not only snow but freezing rain and ice pellets as possible factors in precipitation.

While the system is still highly variable, meteorologist Melissa Field says it looks like it will start as snow before ultimately turning to rain.

"There is the potential for significant shovellable amounts, we'll say," Field told the St. John's Morning Show.

While the special weather statement also says amounts could be "significant," Field said it's too early to estimate numbers.

It's also highly possible the models could change before Thursday.

The statement runs from Baie Verte to Renews, and encompasses the St. John's metro region.

Field said the system appears to be leading with snow, which could arrive late on Thursday afternoon and then switch to rain overnight into Friday morning.
