Sign work prompts upcoming HRBT closure

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Multiple full closures of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will take place overnight Tuesday into Wednesday to put up new signs over Interstate 64.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said the crews working on the HRBT expansion project have scheduled multiple full closures to put up the signs. Drivers traveling on I-64 in both directions can expect to be stopped overnight Tuesday.

There will be up to three full closures of the HRBT, each lasting up to 60 minutes between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 4 a.m. Wednesday. While the closures are in effect, traffic will be steered away from the HRBT. Drivers are advised to use I-664 and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate.

The backup date for the work will be overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unexpected circumstances. Construction updates and lane closure alerts are available at HRBTexpansion.org.
