‘Shy’ dog spends 11 years in shelter — and still needs home. ‘Overlooked for so long’
A “shy” dog has spent about 11 years in an Alabama shelter — and still needs a home.
Now, the 2nd Chance Shelter said it hopes Fergie the dog’s luck will change as she marks her 13th birthday in its care.
“No dog should have to celebrate their 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and now 13th birthday in a shelter,” the animal organization said Feb. 26 in a Facebook post written from Fergie’s perspective. “Yet here I am. I really would love a forever family as my birthday wish!”
Fergie landed at the shelter in Boaz — roughly 65 miles northeast of Birmingham — when she was about 2 years old. The facility in online posts said the mixed-breed dog was “rescued as a stray” and believes she hadn’t spent much time with people. Over the years, she continued to be timid around shelter workers.
“I will take treats from their hands but I am still shy and too scared to let them pet me,” the animal organization wrote.
Though the shelter in past social media posts said Fergie’s behavior may make it tough for her to get a home, it’s holding out hope that a patient person will adopt her.
“I am a very shy girl,” the shelter wrote. “This is the main reason I have been overlooked for so long.”
As of Feb. 26, Fergie was still in need of an owner. Anyone interested in adopting the senior dog is asked to call the shelter at 256-561-2411.
The organization didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for more information on Feb. 27.
