Shots fired call leads to two arrests in Cheatham County

CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Sounds of yelling and shots being fired elicited a 911 call and sent Cheatham County deputies scrambling to a rural home to sort it all out.

It happened on April 15 on Walnut Drive. When the first deputies arrived, they met Larry Dunn on the street near the residence. The 47-year-old was frazzled and told the officers that he had just been shot at by a man at the residence where he had come from.

He also told deputies that a woman, 36, was hit. Body cam showed deputies trying to unravel the confusing story.

News 2 checked the history of Larry Dunn. According to the Department of Correction, Dunn is a violent sex offender convicted of Statutory Rape by an Authority Figure in August 2012.

The agency also showed Dunn was found guilty of two counts of aggravated robbery from in 2013 in Wilson County. Dunn’s sentence was imposed in September 2014 and he was transferred to TDOC in January 2015.

Dunn was in prison until Aug. 23, 2023, when he expired his sentence.

While trying to find facts, deputies put Dunn in the back of the police car while other deputies quickly moved to the house and used the car’s bullhorn to order Paul Johnson to exit the home and surrender.

Ultimately, Johnson and a female surrendered without incident. The deputies handcuffed them.

Johnson, 52, was secured and deputies explained they were at the home because he allegedly fired multiple shotgun blasts to make Dunn leave the property.

According to deputies, one of the shotgun blasts caused a non-life-threatening injury to a woman who was inside a nearby shed. Deputies said the wounds were superficial. The woman believed her cuts were caused by broken glass. Deputies told her they believed that her injuries were a result of a birdshot fired by Johnson’s shotgun.

The deputies cleared the house and found no other people or contraband inside.

Before deputies took Johnson to jail where he was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, they engaged him on the front porch about what transpired.

Johnson said very little and began showing signs of some sort of medical issue. Deputies gave him water and also a dose of Narcan as they say, just in case he is on something that he is not revealing to them.

As for Larry Dunn Sr., deputies told him he’d been out of jail for almost a year and he had 48 hours to register as a sex offender which he failed to do. So Dunn was also taken to jail on those charges
