3rd victim in Oakland’s Skyline High School graduation shooting located, 1 arrested

(KRON) — The number of people who were shot at Skyline High School’s graduation ceremony in Oakland on Thursday night has been revised from two to three, the Oakland Police Department confirmed. One person has been arrested in connection to the incident.

Initial reports indicated that two adult victims — one man and one woman — had been shot. Further investigation led officers to locate a third shooting victim at an area hospital.

All three victims are expected to survive, police said.

According to police, two groups of people got into a fight in the school parking lot. The altercation escalated and multiple people were struck by gunfire.

OPD officers detained multiple individuals and arrested one person. Investigators, police say, are actively looking for additional shooters and witnesses.

The shooting happened just before 7:45 p.m., per OPD. Police have indicated that there is no ongoing danger to the community.

According to witnesses, the shots were heard after the ceremony ended, prompting people to run for safety. There was a heavy police presence at the school following the shooting. OPD said California Highway Patrol responded to assist.

Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell, Superintendent of Oakland Unified School District, issued a statement that read in part:

“What happened after Skyline High School’s graduation on Thursday evening was heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable. The incident happened after the ceremony had concluded, and after many students, families, and staff had left the campus. Some people remained on the field wrapping up the celebration and some staff members were cleaning up, when the shooting happened. I want to appreciate the staff from Skyline and the District who were on site at the time and immediately responded to take control of this challenging situation until police could arrive.”

Skyline High School is located at 12250 Skyline Blvd.
