Shooting kills south Augusta man, investigation underway

Augusta authorities are investigating the murder of a young man near south Augusta.

Richmond County sheriff's deputies responded to the 2100 block of Lumpkin Road on Saturday at about 5 p.m. in reference to a suspicious situation, according to Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. John Perry. Upon arrival, they found the body of someone who had been shot.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed that the victim is Walter Smith, 28, who lived in the area.

An autopsy has been scheduled and the investigation is in its early stages.
