Shetland has cast Mr Bates vs The Post Office star Ian Hart for its ninth season.

Production is officially underway on the Scottish detective drama, which recently saw After Life's Ashley Jensen land a co-lead role in the series due to Douglas Henshall's exit.

Joining Jensen and fellow lead Alison O'Donnell will be the aforementioned Ian Hart, Vincent Regan (One Piece), Stuart Campbell (SAS Rogue Heroes) and Nalini Chetty (Six Four) in the guest cast.

The guests for season 9 also include Robert Jack (Damaged), Lesley Hart (River City) and Jimmy Yuill (EastEnders).

"I’m looking forward to embarking on a Shetland adventure – it’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit and to do so with this incredible drama is wonderful," Ian Hart said.

Vincent Regan also commented: "I’m thrilled [to] be joining the cast of Shetland which is such a beloved BBC drama. My character and his family are at the heart of this dark and twisting storyline and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.

"The opportunity to visit the Shetland Isles was also a real pull to the part as well as working with the likes of Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell.”

The series is set to film across the Shetland Isles, as well as other areas in Scotland, over the next several months.

There is plenty more Shetland on the way because the BBC recently renewed the procedural drama for two more seasons. The new episodes will see DI Calder investigating the disappearance of Tosh's friend amid a series of cryptic clues.

"I could not be happier that Shetland is returning for two more series and am so excited to get started," Alison O'Donnell said of the renewal. "I'm really proud of the journey this show has been on and of the way it continues to evolve and grow in exciting and surprising ways.

"That we have managed to grow such a loyal and supportive viewership is a dream come true. Ashley and I just scratched the surface of our dynamic in series 8, and I am delighted that we now have the opportunity to build on that."

Shetland will return to BBC One and the BBC iPlayer later this year.
