This campaign season, the Stubblefield Institute on campus has invited candidates to meet with university community. GOP gubernatorial hopefuls were attended the event Tuesday.

“I just think state and local politics gets washed out in the noise of national politics,” Chelsea Wells, a Shepherd University student from Charles Town, said. “Especially as a political science major, I deeply care about it.”

Shelby Daugherty is a graduate student from Buckhannon in the north central region of West Virginia. Voting, she says, is an important responsibility.

“Getting students to register and vote is so important,” Daugherty said. “It’s a way to authenticate opinions and implement ideas into this world.”

For Brianna Eskew, a Shepherd University student from Martinsburg, said an issue she would like to see candidates address is preventing racial discrimination.

“Even on campus, even in jobs I have worked,” Eskew said. “It would be beneficial for someone all around to understand.”

Students here have scheduled more forums throughout the rest of the campaign season.
