Suspect in custody after Fremont standoff

FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a suspect is in custody following an hours-long standoff in Fremont.

Michigan State Police said around 2 a.m. Thursday that it received a report of a neighbor dispute at a house on Pine Street.

A 40-year-old man threatened the neighbor with a firearm and then went inside his house. Officers negotiated with the suspect over the telephone for several hours before he was taken into custody without incident, according to MSP.

The Newaygo County Emergency Services asked residents to avoid the area between Division and Merchant avenues and Cedar and Maple streets. Residents were asked to stay inside and lock their doors. The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

Fremont Public Schools are on a two-hour delay, according to the Newaygo County Emergency Services.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fremont Police Department, according to state police.
