A Shelby business owner could be featured in a two-page spread in a national magazine and win a nice sum of money.

Angela Franklin, who owns and operates Uptown Indigo in Shelby, is in the top five vote-getters in the Fab Over 40 competition. The contest had 50 candidates but has been narrowed to the handful from which a winner will be selected.

Voting ends Thursday night.

On the VoteFab40.com website, Franklin describes herself as a 53-year-old late bloomer.

Previously a nurse at Levine Cancer Center, her career changed directions just as COVID began spreading across the nation.

Simultaneously her son, who ran Uptown Indigo in Shelby, moved across the country. Franklin took on the challenge of running the business and in recent months added a private club to the event space.

On the website, Franklin answers three questions.

  1. What is your favorite tip to stay fabulous?

Franklin says she takes the stairs a lot while working at Uptown Indigo and Steeples City Club. Often making updates and repairs to the historic building keeps her busy, but inner strength also makes the difference.

“My tip to stay fabulous is to listen to that voice that guides us to take care of ourselves daily and make choices to enhance our body, mind and spirit,” she says on the contest website.

  1. What advice would you give your younger self?

She said walking away from her people-pleasing tendencies allowed her to learn that her wants also deserve a place at the table.

“I would tell my younger self that what I want, think, and feel, is so important. Many years I did what others wanted and needed from me and had a skewed belief that taking care of my body and soul, speaking my truth was a selfish act,” she wrote.

  1. What would you do with the $40,000?

While working at Atrium, Franklin said she would host retreats for cancer patients. She wants to start that again out of her business and donate some money to the center itself.

“I use to be a cancer navigator nurse. I would love to have a retreat for women who are in the midst of cancer treatment to help them feel like their best selves,” she answered.

Franklin said she’s not one to seek the spotlight, but she’s excited about making it so far into the competition.

“This is normally not my thing. I like to be the background,” she said.

If she wins, Franklin will be featured in NewBeauty magazine and collect a $40,000 prize.

Money raised from voting also supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
