Sheetz shooting in Spotsylvania County believed to be hate crime; man arrested

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Deputies said a man faces charges in connection to a double shooting that took place Wednesday in a Sheetz parking lot.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said the shooting appeared to be a hate/bias crime.

SCSO said the shooting took place at the convenience store and gas station, located in the 5000 block of Mudd Tavern Rd. in the Thornburg area, around 9:30 p.m.

Detectives found a 29-year-old man and a 45-year-man who had been shot a number of times. Medics took the men to a trauma center with critical injuries.

SCSO said that witnesses and surveillance footage led them to Douglas Wayne Cornett, 57, of Caroline County. With the help of the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office, detectives arrested Cornett.
