Sheboygan buys former Aurora Medical Group site for $1.4M with plans to transform it into fire department headquarters. What happens next?

SHEBOYGAN – A former Aurora Medical Group building near Kohler Memorial Drive was sold to the city of Sheboygan for future fire department use.

A May 13 property deed shows the medical group sold the property at 1211 N. 23rd St. for $1.4 million. The Common Council authorized the purchase of the property Feb. 19.

The city intends to transform it into the new Sheboygan Fire Department headquarters, stationed at 1326 N. 25th St. for more than 50 years.

SFD is still in the early stages of this process. Fire Chief Eric Montellano said the department chose an architecture firm but hasn’t started meeting yet because the firm and the city of Sheboygan first need to review contracts.

The new SFD headquarters could have an on-site training facility, more storage space and an Emergency Operation Center. It could be ADA compliant and provide bathroom and shower facilities for men and women staff, too.

The Aurora property was formerly owned by the Sheboygan County Highway Department. An Aurora spokesperson previously told the Sheboygan Press they didn’t have more details about the group’s intentions for the property.
