The Anaheim Ducks said they wanted a good start against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of their second-round series. Instead a gaffe by Ducks defenseman Shea Theodore led to a goal by the Oilers that put them up 1-0.

Theodore had the puck in his zone and then skated in front of the net while being pressured by the Oilers. He then accidentally backhanded the puck past Ducks goaltender John Gibson.

The goal came just 3:31 into the game and was credited to Edmonton forward Drake Caggiula.

“I think grab the momentum right away, I think that’s first and foremost and relax and settle in at the same time,” Anaheim forward Ryan Kesler said at morning skate about the importance of a good start in Game 7. “It’s a mindset. You go out and expect to start on time. You expect to generate momentum by getting shots and getting on the body.”

The Ducks are trying to erase their demons of past Game 7 struggles. Anaheim has lost four straight Game 7s on home ice. Each of those previous games they allowed the first goal within the first seven minutes of each contest.
