Shawnee Skies breaks ground on new event center

WYANDOTTE, Okla. — It’s been a popular spot in Wyandotte since a grant – a little more than five years ago – made it possible. It’s now about to get bigger.

Ground was broken, today, on the land where a new event center will be added to Shawnee Skies.

It’s the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma’s shooting and training complex.

The 8,000-square-foot facility will accommodate gatherings of more than 250 people.

It will also feature many high-tech amenities – and, will be, according to officials, the center of attention for future state and national sporting clay competitions.

“It’s time to move to that next level. We’re gonna host the Oklahoma State Shoot, this year, for sporting clays. That’s gonna bring 300 to 400 shooters from all across the midwest to come here to compete in June,” said Tim Botts, Shawnee Skies General Manager.

“In our grant, we included law enforcement, because we want our law enforcement people to be able to here to shoot free anytime they want, so that they can maintain their credentials, etcetera, so, it’s exciting to be able to expand, and to help the community,” said Chief Glenna J. Wallace, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.

Phase one of the project is expected to be finished by the state competition in June — with the entire addition expected to be finished by this fall.

Shawnee Skies is open from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
