Share Our Spare helping Chicago families as need grows

CHICAGO — A local organization is asking for help to meet the urgent need for diapers.

Every month, the non-profit Share Our Spare along with its partners are handing out more than 500,000 diapers to Chicago-area families.

“Our mission is to ensure every Chicago child has what they need to thrive,” Alex Goodfellow, the executive director of SOS, said.

Goodfellow said its research shows nearly half of local families are carrying the stress of struggling to provide diapers for their babies.

“Basic essential costs are just higher,” Goodfellow said. “So a lot more families are experiencing need than they were 2, 3, 4, 5 years ago.”

SOS is now in its 13th year collecting new and gently used baby items that are repurposed and recirculated to families.

“I think there’s a way we can honor other mothers in the community,” Goodfellow said. “It’s as simple as going in your kid’s closet, pulling out the things they’ve grown out of.”

Anyone who wants to help out can also host a diaper drive. All sizes are needed.

Goodfellow is a mother of three and she believes every family deserves to be supported.
