The sequel to Marvel Studios and Disney’s 2021 blockbuster hit “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is set to begin production in 2025.

Key points:

  • Although lead actor Simu Liu previously noted his uncertainty about the sequel's production timeline, industry insider Daniel Richtman revealed that filming for the movie is set to start as early as 2025.

The details:

  • According to Richtman, “Shang-Chi 2” will focus on time travel and may feature the appearance of Iron Fist, a character previously rumored to be part of a female-led project. However, it remains unclear if this is the same project or if Iron Fist will have a more significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) moving forward.

  • In July 2022, a leaked European trademark suggested that the sequel might be titled “Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time.” Although Marvel Studios has not confirmed this title, it aligns with Richtman's claim that the sequel will involve time travel.

  • Although Liu has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming “Shang-Chi” sequel and the animated series “Marvel Zombies,” he expressed uncertainty about his participation in the upcoming 2026 film “Avengers 5.”

  • Director and writer Destin Daniel Cretton has also been confirmed as returning to helm the sequel.

  • “Shang-Chi 2” currently does not have a release date.
