Shallowater man killed in wreck near Lubbock

A Shallowater man died and another was injured when their pickup trucks collided head-on near Lubbock Wednesday evening.

About 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 68-year-old Santiago Serbin, Jr. of Shallowater was southbound on FM 2378 about four miles southwest of Lubbock. According to a preliminary investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Serbin was driving on the wrong side of the road as a 2019 Silverado HD driven by 40-year-old James Edwin Barrett of Shallowater approached.

DPS said Barrett steered to the right to avoid the collision, but the vehicles crashed in the roadway, striking the left-front portion of each truck.

Serbin was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS. He was wearing a seatbelt. Barrett, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was treated on scene for minor injuries and released.
