Shailene Woodley's 'Spider-Man' Role May Have Gone to a Canadian Muse

Shailene Woodley's 'Spider-Man' Role May Have Gone to a Canadian Muse

Shailene Woodley is, without a doubt, one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood. She's on the cover of Entertainment Weekly this week for her role in Divergent. She shared the U. S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at Sundance with her The Spectacular Now co-star. She bagged the coveted role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in the Y.A. adaptation The Fault in Our Stars. But with a solo rise sometimes comes a franchise fade, and news also came this week that Woodley had been cut out, in the middle of filming, from The Amazing Spider-man 2, for which she had signed on to play love interest Mary Jane Watson. All of which makes the addition of another rising star to the superhero cast all too suspicious.

Last night ET Canada tweeted that actress Sarah Gadon confirmed to them that she is "joining The Amazing Spider-Man franchise." And considering the recent departure of Woodley, well, that immediately raised eyebrows. The Playlist's headline noted that Gadon joins in a "role everyone thinks is Mary Jane Watson." But Bleeding Cool threw a little cold water on that theory, pointing out that The Wrap's Jeff Sneider tweeted the following: "Being told that reports of SARAH GADON being cast as Mary Jane Watson in Amazing Spider-Man 2 are NOT TRUE!" Reports that surfaced Wednesday indicated that Woodley's character would be scrubbed from the second movie but that she would be added back into the third movie, and in that case may be recast. ET Canada's tweet was carefully worded to indicate that Gafdon was not joining the sequel, just the franchise, which will now span four movies

Gadon by all means is an interesting choice. She's been labeled David Cronenberg's "muse" and landed the female lead in Universal's Dracula. But is she your Mary Jane? Or is she just another body added to his increasingly crowded franchise? In any case, Woodley's probably got enough on her plate.
