Shailene Woodley Speaks Out About #BlackLivesMatter

Shailene Woodley is speaking out about social injustice. The Divergent star has been using her platform to raise awareness for the #BlackLivesMatter campaign. Earlier this week, the 24-year-old joined The Vampire Diaries star Kendrick Sampson on The Young Turks and discussed why this issue is more important than ever.

“The root of the problem is fear,” she said. “We are all so narcissistic in our minds and think our planet, our lives are the most important lives out there.” She added, “We don’t live in a country where everyone is thriving. Everyone’s trying to get by. Everyone’s trying to scrape by.”

But this isn’t the first time Woodley has lent her voice to the cause. Earlier this month the actress posted a cartoon to her Instagram account that explains why people should stop saying “#AllLivesMatter” in response to “#BlackLivesMatter.” She also begged her followers to call the Baton Rouge, La., Sheriff’s Department and demand the release of DeRay Mckesson, one of the leaders of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, who was arrested during a peaceful protest in the wake of the tragic shooting of Alton Sterling. (McKesson was released the next day.)

“He was arrested for doing literally nothing,” Woodley said in the clip. “We have to stand together in solidarity and fight against this. They need our help, and we need their help. It’s a two-way street.”
