Sewage overflow spills onto waterfront walkway under Burnside Bridge

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – People taking a stroll on the Waterfront walkway should avoid the area under the Burnside Bridge after sewage from a storm pipe made its way onto the pavement Monday.

Officials say the mess came from a nearby pump station that sends sewage to a local wastewater treatment facility. It’s not yet known just how much waste needs to be cleaned up.

City crews have posted warning signs in the area to restrict public access, though they have not specified how long the area will be blocked. And while officials say contamination of the Willamette River is unlikely, they also advise people to avoid the water near the Burnside Bridge for 48 hours.

If you ever see sewage overflowing, be sure to call the City of Portland’s hotline at 503-823-1700.
