‘Strong thunderstorm’ heading toward Isle of Wight and surrounding areas

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Amelia and Powhatan counties until 8:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield issued the warning ahead of tonight, citing a chance of wind speeds close to 60 mph.

According to a “special weather statement” from the weather service, a “strong thunderstorm” is heading toward Isle of Wight and surrounding areas. At 7:55 p.m., meteorologists said Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Surry, moving southeast at 35 mph. They estimated that the storm would reach Isle of Wight at 8:25 p.m.

Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Top concerns are damaging wind gusts and large hail. The tornado threat is lower, but not zero. The most likely time for severe storms will be between 6-10 p.m.

For the rest of the week, temperatures will range from the 60s to the 80s.
