Severe thunderstorms cause major flooding in Grayson County

UPDATE 6:24 P.M. GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR)–VDOT has released an update about the status of Grassy Creek Road after flooding.

According to VDOT, officials say the Grassy Creek Road will remain closed as crews continue clearing the road to make it passable. They hope to have the road reopened within the next three days depending on the weather and water level.

UPDATE: 2:09 P.M. GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Joseph Barker with the Virginia Department of Transportation says eight roads are now passable after heavy rain in Grayson County on Wednesday night.

WFXR’s Pinpoint Weather team says about two to four inches of rain fell across the county during a storm on May 22. As a result, the county went under a flash flood warning as severe thunderstorms passed.

The storm left 10 roads in the White Top area with damages. However, as crews worked on repairs, Barker says eight roads are now open and Grassy Creek and Brooke Green Roads remain closed.

VDOT estimates Grassy Creek Road will be open by 4 p.m. on May 23, and Brooke Green Road is not expected to open for a week.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — After thunderstorms roared across the region, Grayson County was hit with floods leaving several roads closed and damaged on Thursday morning.

On May 22, several first responders including the Rugby Volunteer Fire and Rescue were called to Grassy Creek and surrounding areas.

The Sheriff’s Office says several roads in the west end of the county are flooded and are closed to all traffic. This includes:

  • Grassy Creek Road

  • Reservation Lane

  • Brook Green Road

  • Bear Branch Road

  • Rugby Road

  • Mill Creek Lane

  • Hiley Branch Lane

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)said a mudslide occurred on Middle Fork Road and the road is closed.

The Sheriff’s Office told WFXR News that crews with VDOT are working to repair and reopen the roads.

First responders are encouraging drivers to use caution and report any roads that are damaged.
