Six people hurt, nine cars towed in Rt 54 dust storm crashes

Update on 5/22 at 7:30 a.m.

LOGAN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — State Police have shared new details on the Route 54 crashes resulting from a dust storm that developed Tuesday evening over parts of Central Illinois.

Around 5:48 p.m., police responded to reports of four separate crashes near 2000 Avenue. Six people reported injuries on the scene and were taken to local hospitals. Nine vehicles total had to be towed.

After it was determined visibility was too low due to the dust storm, the roadway was temporarily shut down. It was eventually reopened at 9:43 p.m.

State Police say there is no more information available at this time.


LOGAN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — There is a several-car pileup on Illinois Route 54 in Logan County, Illinois State Police confirmed.

It happened at 2000 Avenue near 5:45 p.m. The crash comes as a dust storm impacts the area, as well as several other interstates and locations throughout Central Illinois.

State Police say several people were hurt in the accident and taken to area hospitals.

ISP is currently at the scene. They say there is no further information available at this time.
