Several New Car, Truck, and SUV Models Garner Segment Awards for APEAL and Initial Quality

A handful of new car, SUV, and light-truck models—including one launch model—earn segment-level awards in the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM and the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). The recently released APEAL Study measures owner satisfaction with the performance, design, content, and layout of their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, while the IQS examines problems experienced during that same time.

Porsche produces three models that receive both APEAL Study and IQS segment-level awards, and BMW garners APEAL awards for several models that also rank among the top three in their respective segments in the 2016 IQS.

Overall, J.D. Power finds that non-premium Buick, Hyundai, and Kia brands as well as premium marques Lexus and Mercedes-Benz launched several models in 2016 with strong performances in initial quality and also in overall vehicle appeal. Among new models, the Buick Cascada (Compact Sporty Car segment) is the only launch model to receive segment-level awards in both J.D. Power studies this year, while the Chevrolet Tahoe (Large SUV), redesigned in 2015, also receives segment-level awards for initial quality and appeal. The GMC Sierra (Large Heavy Duty Pickup) also receives a segment-level APEAL Study award and ranks among the top three models with the fewest problems in the 2016 IQS.

Among Korean brands, Kia’s quirky Soul (Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle), last redesigned in 2013, receives a segment-level award in both the 2016 IQS and the 2016 APEAL Study. The Hyundai Tucson, redesigned for 2016, receives a segment-level APEAL award in the Small SUV segment and is the second-most problem-free model in its segment in the 2016 IQS.

Two Porsche models that perform well in both studies are the iconic 911 (Midsize Premium Sporty Car) and the Macan (Compact Premium SUV). Porsche, the highest-scoring brand in the APEAL Study for 12 straight years, also receives a segment-level APEAL award this year for the Boxster (Compact Premium Sporty Car), which is among the top three models with the fewest problems in its segment as measured in the 2016 IQS.

It’s also notable that BMW receives three APEAL Study segment-level awards for models that rank among the top three models in their respective segments in the 2016 IQS. The 2 Series (Small Premium Car), new X1 (Small Premium SUV), and the X6 (Midsize Premium SUV) receive 2016 APEAL Study segment awards. Additionally, all are among the top three models with the fewest problems in their respective segments in the 2016 IQS.
