Services, 5K runs and more: a look at upcoming events this Memorial Day weekend

May 22—With those who have lost a loved one or someone they were fighting beside in battle preparing to honor America's fallen veterans on Memorial Day this upcoming Monday, Lewis County residents have a variety of ceremonies and events they can attend to mark the occasion.

From a run at Centralia College, a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis and the Claquato Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony, here's what is happening this Memorial Day weekend in Lewis County.

Mountain View Cemetery flag placing

Beginning this Friday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Newell Hoerling's Mortuary will hold a Memorial Day flag placing event at Mountain View Cemetery, located at 1113 Caveness Drive in Centralia, according to a Newell Hoerling's Mortuary Facebook post.

Centralia College

On Saturday, May 25, Centralia College will host the Memorial Day Run to Remember 5K, with runner check-in starting 7 a.m. in the Littel Commencement Field, located at 600 Centralia College Blvd.

Centralia College is partnering with Lewis County Coffee Co. and the nonprofit organizations Survivor's Advocacy Group and Veterans Journey Forward to organize the run, which will start and end at Littel Commencement Field.

Registration is required to participate and costs $30 per person, with all proceeds going toward Veterans Journey Forward. Runners will receive a Run to Remember shirt. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.veteransmuseum.org/event-details/memorial-day-5k.

Following the the end of the Memorial Day Run to Remember 5K on Saturday, Centralia College will host a Memorial Day ceremony at Littel Commencement Field starting at 11 a.m.

After the ceremony, Centralia College's Memorial Day market — which is free to attend — will open in the field, featuring local vendors, a resource fair and live music.

Claquato Cemetery ceremony

On Monday, May 27, Claquato Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. at the cemetery's flagpole. Claquato Cemetery is located at 142 Stearns Road in Chehalis.

The ceremony will be carried out by members of the American Legion Grant Hodge Post 17 in Centralia, the American Legion Post 22 in Chehalis, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2200 and local Boy Scouts of America troopers.

This event is free to attend.

Veterans Memorial Museum

Also on Monday, May 27, the Veterans Memorial Museum — located at 100 SW Veterans Way in Chehalis — will host its Tree of Life ceremony, where the names of fallen U.S. service members whose names are on dog tags hanging from the tree are read off in remembrance.

This ceremony will be held in the east end of the museum where the Tree of Life stands, and begins at 2 p.m.
