Serena Williams Refuses to Be Silent About Police Brutality

From Esquire

When Serena Williams asked her 18-year-old nephew to drive her to her meetings, she thought she was being safe-after all, she had work to do on her phone. But then, she saw a cop on the side of the road, and her heart stopped.

In a chilling Facebook status posted Tuesday afternoon, Williams illustrated the panic that flooded her body when she saw the police car.

"...I remembered that horrible video of the woman in the car when a cop shot her boyfriend," she wrote in the status. "All of this went through my mind in a matter of seconds. I even regretted not driving myself. I would never forgive myself if something happened to my nephew. He's so innocent. So were all 'the others.'"

Serena then emphasized that, although it's 2016, and although the black community shouldn't have to fear the people who are supposed to protect America, our society still has a long way to go:

"I had to take a look at me. What about my nephews? What if I have a son and what about my daughters? As Dr. Martin Luther King said, 'There comes a time when silence is betrayal.'"
