Serena Williams' husband pays tribute to her post-baby journey to the U.S. Open

On Saturday, Serena Williams will be on the court for the U.S. Open finals, playing for her record-tying 24th Grand Slam title. It’s incredible because Serena herself is incredible, but also because just a year ago, she was fighting for her life.

To celebrate Williams’ return to the U.S. Open finals, her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, had a video created from his own footage, and he posted it on his Twitter account.

It’s clear how much Ohanian admires his talented wife. In addition to a snippet of her emotional post-semifinals interview, there’s footage of Serena just after their daughter, Alexis Olympia, was born. She came into the world on September 1, 2017, and Williams needed a c-section due to fetal distress. She then developed blood clots in her lungs and a pulmonary embolism, and when she had a coughing fit that reopened her c-section incision, she had to be rushed into surgery — just one of a number of surgeries she would have in the weeks that followed.

It was a long road back — Williams has been very candid about her struggles with postpartum depression, getting well after surgery, and her fears about motherhood — and it’s phenomenal that just a year after experiencing so many health problems, Williams is back at the top of her game. As her partner, Ohanian has seen Serena make progress on her journey every day, and now he wants to make sure everyone else (including Serena) sees it too.
