Senior citizens targeted in timeshare schemes

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Senior citizens with timeshares are becoming the target of schemes and losing big.

“You’re contacted by people that are criminals and it’s the Mexican cartel,” said Mike Finn, an attorney with Finn Law Group in St. Petersburg.

Finn represents clients who are navigating the process of getting out of their timeshare.

“What they’re doing is they’re appealing to the greed that all of us have in us,” Finn said. “They’re saying that they’re going to pay for my timeshare which I just learned was pretty worthless from somebody else. They’re going pay me more than I paid for my timeshare.”

Finn says in many cases the sales pitch is consistent and should serve as a warning.

“You’re told that you suddenly need a business license in Mexico,” Finn said. “There’s a tie up in customs, things that are ludicrous and they don’t exist. However, once people are in for a penny, a lot of people will be in for the pound.”
