Senate passes foreign aid bill

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Billions of dollars in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan passed in the U.S. Senate on overnight.

The bill also includes a provision that could lead to a ban on TikTok.

“It’s not every day you can say you made the world truly a better place,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

For Ukraine and Israel, it will provide military aid, and replenish U.S. weapons systems while also sending humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

“Rest assured, America will never shrink from its responsibilities as a leader on the world stage,” said Schumer.

The legislation also forces TikTok’s China-based parent company to sell the social media platform under the threat of a ban.

A similar plan passed the Senate two months ago but the House stalled for weeks then broke it into four separate bills and finally passed those over the weekend requiring the Senate to vote again.

“To provide for the common defense is one of Congress’s primary responsibilities,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

President Biden says he will sign the bill as soon as it makes it to his desk.
