Sen. Ted Cruz hit with beer can thrown at Astros World Series parade, video shows

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz was struck by a beer can during a parade celebrating the World Series victory by the Houston Astros, according to Houston police.

Video shows Cruz, a Republican from Houston, wearing a bright orange shirt and standing on the back of a Humvee when the incident occurred on Monday, Nov. 7 in downtown Houston, according to KTRK.

A 33-year-old man threw a beer can at Cruz, which hit him in the chest and neck area, according to a statement from the Houston Police Department. He did not require medical attention.

Police then arrested the man without incident, according to the statement. He was brought to jail and faces assault charges. His name will be released when charges are formally filed, according to the statement.

The Houston Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.

Those attending the parade, which drew hundreds of thousands of fans, cheered and jeered Cruz during the parade. Cruz is a fan of the Astros and attended at least one World Series game in Houston.

The Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday to win the 2022 World Series, four games to two.

The incident comes as a growing number of Americans are concerned about a rising threat of political violence, according to previous reporting from McClatchy News.
