Selinsgrove council member resigns

Apr. 1—SELINSGROVE — Shane Hendricks has resigned from the Selinsgrove borough council and former Councilman Erik Viker will fill the seat.

"There's just too much going on. I didn't need the stress," said Hendricks, a commercial airline pilot who is nearing retirement regarding his decision to leave the council four months after his election to a four-year term.

The borough council accepted Hendricks' resignation Monday and appointed Viker to fill the seat through the end of 2025.

Solicitor Robert Cravitz advised the council that an appointment could be made immediately or the seat could be advertised.

Council member Christian Schlieder said he preferred to advertise the seat, but council member Scott Frost said the same outcome would occur and Viker would be appointed. Viker's appointment was approved by a 5-1 vote, with Schlieder opposed.

Hendricks is the fourth council member to resign from the municipal board in the past year.

Last April, Marvin Rudnitsky, Sara Lauver and Christopher Kalcich resigned at the same time from the council amid an ongoing controversy over public funding of the Regional Engagement Center. They were replaced by Hendricks and Viker, both of whom had previously served on the council, and Mary Bannon for the remainder of the year.

Viker, who attended Monday's public meeting and accepted the appointment, will be sworn in to office at the next council meeting on May 6.

In other business, the borough has added a gate and fencing at a cost of $3,400 at the compost and recycling site to ensure only Selinsgrove borough residents use the facility.

The hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon every first and third Saturday.
