Sarasota Memorial Hospital maintained its place among the world’s best hospitals as Newsweek released its sixth annual list of the world’s best hospitals. A total of 412 hospitals in the U.S. and 18 in Florida made the list.

SMH maintained its place as the fourth-ranked hospital in Florida and rose to No. 131 in the country, compared with its ranking at No. 146 in the 2023 list and 161 in 2022.

The rankings, conducted by Newsweek with market research company Statista Inc., survey about 2,400 medical institutions in 30 countries. They can be found online at http://tiny.cc/5gb4xz.

The list is based on patient care quality metrics as well as surveys of patients, physicians and hospital staff.

The top five hospitals were all in North America. Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic and Cleveland, Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic were the top two. Toronto General in Toronto, Canada, ranked No. 3, followed by The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Florida campus of Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville ranked No. 1 in Florida and No. 15 in the U.S., followed by the Florida campus of Cleveland Clinic in Weston which was No. 45 in the nation; Tampa General Hospital, which finished No. 77 in the nation; and SMH, which earned an award for infection prevention and remains the only hospital in Southwest Florida to make the list.

In a prepared statement, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System CEO David Verinder attributed the repeated recognition to the healthcare team and its commitment to the community.

“The people who work here are what sets Sarasota Memorial apart,” he said. “There is a sense of pride and community ownership that has been passed down through the decades and continues to inspire us today.”

Also in a news release, Nancy Cooper, Global Editor-in-Chief for Newsweek, noted the goal of the study is to provide a data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance across countries.

The list, she said, recognizes hospitals that consistently attract the best people and provide the best outcomes for patients as well as the most important new therapies and research.

The World’s Best Hospitals 2024 ranking lists the best hospitals in 30 countries: the USA, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, United Kingdom, South Korea, Brazil, India, Spain, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Colombia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Malaysia, Thailand, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Israel, and Singapore. The countries were selected based on multiple comparability factors, such as standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System frequently ranks high on a variety of national lists, including one compiled by U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades and The Leapfrog Group.

All of these rankings reflect on facilities and outcomes at the health system’s Sarasota campus.

The SMH Venice campus, which opened in November, 2021 as a 110-bed facility is still too new. It is slated to expand to 178 beds once the northeast tower opens as soon as mid-April.

Phase 2 of that expansion, expected to open in the fall of 2024, will include a medical surgical unit and 34 private rooms that will boost the overall inpatient bed count to 212.

SMH also plans to break ground in 2025 on a hospital near the Interstate 75 exit at Sumter Boulevard in North Port and a free-standing emergency room that could eventually expand into a hospital in the Wellen Park neighborhood of North Port.
