See the stats: Shakira’s staggering success

Shakira is Latin music’s best-known female star, but her music knows no bounds. She’s had massive success worldwide in both Spanish and English. Superstardom seems what she was born for: “The moment the creative energy started to flow, it never stopped,” the Colombian-born songstress recently told Billboard magazine. Just like her hips, the numbers don’t lie. Shakira has released 11 albums and 56 music videos and broken a string of records along the way. On her latest album, “El Dorado,” she teamed up with fellow Colombian — and a superstar in his own right — Maluma. “We didn't know what to expect from each other, but I always knew Shakira was brilliant,” he said. It was a match made in music heaven. The two are part of what Billboard is calling the “new Latin explosion,” but Shakira has been making major moves since the ’90s. Today, she holds the record for most No. 1 releases among women on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart, and just won five Billboard Latin Music Awards to add to her trophy collection. She already has three Grammys and 11 Latin Grammys. The bilingual musician has fought hard for her fame: “The path to success has been longer, steeper, with more obstacles than if I had been born in Florida or New York City,” she said. Now that she’s a mom, Shakira is juggling a whole lot more. “It’s not easy, continuing a career with intensity and commitment and also being the kind of mother I want to be,” she said, “but I’m discovering it step by step.” She and her partner, soccer star Gerard Piqué, have two sons. Shakira will be hitting the road in June. It’s her first world tour in seven years, and fans (like us!) from Paris to Detroit and Madrid to Miami are celebrating.
