CMS is the latest firm to recruit from Sedgwick's London office with the addition of insurance claims partner Tristan Hall, who also specializes in financial and cyber risks. Five out of six Sedgwick partners in London have now found homes as the San Francisco-based Am Law 200 firm prepares to wind down its operations. The only London-based Sedgwick partner whose next move is unknown is office managing partner Edward Smerdon, who joined the firm with Hall in 2010 from RPC, a British firm also known as Reynolds Porter Chamberlain. Last week RPC hired two other London-based Sedgwick partners in Naomi Vary and Karen Morrish. On Tuesday, Sedgwick partners Mark Kendall and Duncan Strachan led a six-lawyer team leaving Sedgwick's London office for DAC Beachcroft, which they will join in January. Meanwhile, Clyde & Co, another U.K.-based firm, is in discussions to hire up to 25 Sedgwick partners from a number of offices in the U.S. Duane Morris is poised to take on another 10-lawyer employment group from Sedgwick in San Francisco. A back office opened in 2014 by Sedgwick in Kansas City, Missouri, is also scheduled to close next month, resulting in 75 job losses. Sedgwick’s head count has been slashed by more than 40 percent with in the past year, leaving the firm with fewer than 150 lawyers, according to data complied by ALM Legal Intelligence. The exodus began in January when a 40-lawyer group left Sedgwick in New Jersey and Texas. Subsequent mass lateral raids by Robinson & Cole in Miami and New York and British firm Kennedys in Bermuda contributed to the attorney attrition at Sedgwick, as did office closures by the latter in Austin, Texas; Fort Lauderdale; and Washington, D.C. CMS and Sedgwick did not respond to requests for comment.
