Security officer tipped off Hillsborough teacher about investigation into inappropriate conduct with student, HCSO says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A teacher at Henderson Hammock Charter School has been arrested for inappropriate conduct against a student, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) said on Tuesday.

Detectives arrested Johnathan Sheppard, 38, on May 6, saying he inappropriately touched a student and sent inappropriate text messages during the school year.

“This man’s despicable actions against a student, all while holding the trusted position of a teacher, are abhorrent,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “It’s infuriating to know someone responsible for the education and well-being of students would prey upon our most vulnerable, our children.”

Sheppard is facing two charges of soliciting or engaging in a romantic relationship with a student and one charge of lewd or lascivious molestation on a victim between 12 and 15.

A spokesperson for the charter school said the teacher has not been employed since April 19.

“It is disheartening to hear of allegations that an adult in a position of authority may have committed a crime against a student,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Safety is our number one priority at Henderson Hammock Charter School and when we were made aware of the allegation of inappropriate behavior, we immediately involved law enforcement and took app appropriate actions to remove the individual from campus.”

The school deferred all other questions to law enforcement.

Additionally, a Hillsborough County Public School’s Security Officer assigned to the charter school is facing charges for interfering with the investigation after she tipped off Sheppard to details of the investigation.

“This individual was entrusted with the safety and security of the students, and she betrayed that trust,” Chronister said. “Her willingness to help this criminal means she will now face the serious consequences of her actions.”

Hillsborough County Public Schools told News Channel 8: “We are greatly disappointed that she potentially impeded a criminal investigation. She has been suspended without pay pending termination.”

Theresa Cruz, 48, is facing two charges of tampering with a witness and one charge of obstruction.

Detectives are also asking anyone who believes they may be a victim of Sheppard to call HCSO at 813-247-8200.
