Second suspect wanted in deadly sucker-punch assault in Short North turns himself in

The second suspect in the September assault-turned-homicide in the Short North turned himself in Monday, Columbus police said.

Chrystian Foster, 32, turned himself into the Franklin County Jail on Monday, after he was charged with attempted murder and later murder in connection with the Sept. 18 death of Gregory Coleman Jr., 37, who died from his injuries sustained in an assault earlier that month.

Another man, Dwayne Cummings, was arrested earlier this month and was also charged with homicide in connection with Coleman's death.

Coleman died Sept. 18 from injuries he sustained around 2:30 a.m. Sept. 5, when Columbus police say he was drawn into an altercation with Chrystian Foster, 32, while standing outside a bar in the 1000 block of High Street. A second man, whom police identified as Dwayne Cummings, 28, then sucker-punched Coleman.

Graphic video of the assault taken by one of the bystanders shows Coleman falling backwards after being punched in the face, hitting his head on the pavement on North High Street. He was in a coma and on a ventilator until his death at the Ohio State University James Cancer Center Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Coleman, a former football player at Iowa State and the University of Montana, worked as a manager at Short North Pint House, located a few blocks way on North High Street, and had left work shortly before the assault happened. In late September, his family held a public memorial for him at the Pint House.

Coleman is survived by his 9-year-old daughter, his parents, five siblings, and multiple nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Five arrested in shooting that paralyzed woman

Columbus police also announced that they have now arrested one adult and four juveniles in connection with a woman who was shot and left paralyzed last week at a gas station convenience store in South Linden.

Police said Tuesday they had arrested a 17-year-old and two 16-year-olds and charged them with felonious assault.

Last week, Columbus police arrested 20-year-old Jawara Scott, whom police say is the suspected shooter, and a 15-year-old juvenile, charging them both with felonious assault.

The shooting took place around 2 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Sunoco gas station at 1905 Cleveland Ave. in South Linden.

Police said Marissa Jones, 33, and a 51-year-old man were using the gas station when they were approached by at least two young people that were part of a group that was also at the gas station and convenience store. The young people drew firearms and attempted to rob the man and Jones.

According to police, there was a struggle that resulted in at least one shot being fired, striking the woman. The group of young people then fled the area in a dark-colored sedan.

Jones was transported to the hospital, where she remains paralyzed, police said.

Police released still photos from surveillance video inside the convenience store that led to the arrests.
