Second suspect arrested in Smithville shooting incident

Police have arrested a second man in connection with a shooting of a homeowner outside his Smithville residence on Jan. 23.

After being located and interviewed by a Monroe County Sheriff's Office detective on Jan. 30, Edward E. Deckard, 57, whose address is in the 8300 block of South Fairfax Road, was booked into the Monroe County Jail on three felony charges: attempted murder, robbery and criminal recklessness.

His alleged accomplice, 51-year-old Gary “Kevin” Robertson, was tracked down by a drone and police dog and arrested nearby the morning of the incident.

A news release from the sheriff's office says cell phone records documented Deckard's presence at the crime scene, and he reportedly admitted his involvement.

Police said Deckard took detectives to a rural area in the 8000 block of Strain Ridge Road, where they retrieved a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in a brush pile he said was used in the shooting.
