Second person pleads guilty to teen's murder

May 17—A second teen has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting of a 15-year-old last summer.

Teontre Kirby's plea before Circuit Judge Patrick Robb on Friday morning comes days after another teen, Kaden Wilfong, 17, of St. Joseph, also admitted guilt in the death of Carter P. Smith, whose body was found in the early morning hours of June 15, 2023, near 28th and Commercial streets.

Several people were captured on video arriving at and leaving the area where Carter's body was found, and a witness identified several of those involved in the shooting. Police also found guns, bloody clothing and a bag that matched one owned by Carter in Wilfong's home a few blocks north of where the shooting happened, according to court documents.

A third teen, Jackson Griffith also is charged with second-degree murder in Smith's death and is set for a hearing on Friday, June 7. He remains in custody.

Kirby, 17, of St. Joseph, is being held in a juvenile facility without bond until his sentencing at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 26. Wilfong also is in juvenile custody and will be sentenced at 1:15 p.m. that day. Both face 10 to 30 years or life in prison.
