Seattle State of Mind: New Year’s Fun

This morning seemed like any other in that strange void between Christmas and New Year. That peculiar collection of days that don’t seem to have names. Am I the only one who cannot, for the life of me, remember what day it is this week? I always feel a bit disheveled in this week every year, a bit disorganized, easily distracted, etc. My routines all change and it throws me off. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the New Year’s fun part soon.

This morning was particularly disorienting because someone decided to smash the window out of my car and remove an empty backpack I had laying on the seat. When I saw the destroyed window carelessly dispersed on the car’s seat, as well as on the curb where the car was parked, I knew this heralded the official conclusion to the Christmas season. My feeling was confirmed when I arrived at the gym and the friendly front desk person was taking down the garland and lights. I am in no state of despair to see the season roll up, even though I am much less of a Grinch then I used to be.

A popular opinion lately is that The Year of Our Lord Two-Thousand-and-Sixteen was a garbage year. Especially here in “liberal” Seattle where people wanted to see the presidential election go another way. Any other way. I’ve even read in the neighborhood where I reside (Wallingford) there was not one single vote cast for the President Elect. Despite all the bad news going on, I would like to go on record to say that this year has been one of my personal favorite years. For many reasons, this year has been very rewarding to me. I think a lot of folks would come to the same conclusion if they would just change the things they focus their attention on. Maybe less Facebooking in the New Year?

Anyway, I’m not here to talk politics, I’m here to let you know the fun things going on in my beautiful city of Seattle. So here are a few recommendations: Friday night at Nectar Lounge Blackalicious, Latyrx, Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab, Chief Xcel, Lateef, Draze and the Ancient Robots, the Bad Tenants and DJ Indica Jones will be spilling their lyrical trickery and disk spinning synergy all over the faces of the attendees. From Blackalicious’ intelligent word salad style (look up “Chemical Calisthenics” to get an idea of what I’m talking about) to Lyrics Born’s party anthems, this evening promises to be a very hands-in-the-air type experience.

For New Year’s Eve, there are a lot of things going on all over the place. For my money, I’d check out The Showbox for everyone’s favorite AC/DC all-girl cover band Hell’s Belles featuring the all-girl Black Sabbath cover band Black Sabbitch. If you decide to check out this show, please make sure to stretch out your index and pinky fingers as I’m sure there will be a lot of “raising the horns”.

If you survive your New Year’s plans, you might enjoy seeing Henry Rollins on one of his popular spoken word tours. He’ll be speaking at The Neptune on Monday the 2nd. I had the pleasure of listened to a Henry Rollins spoken word album once while driving back to Seattle from L.A., quite heart warming and funny coming from a guy like Rollins. A curious, thoughtful and unpredictable story time is probably what you can expect. I expect it would be a great way to start a new year. Curious, thoughtful and unpredictable.
