Seattle houseboat sinks, leaking diesel fuel into Lake Union

The Washington State Department of Ecology has revised their estimate of the amount of fuel that has spilled into Seattle’s Lake Union after a houseboat sank on Lake Union Saturday afternoon. According to WSDOE, their original estimate that 30-50 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled in the lake has been changed to over 100 gallons.

There was no one in the home at the time of the incident.

To contain the spill at a marina near Gasworks Park, the City of Seattle, WSDOE and a salvage company put booms around the vessel.

WSDOE says Global Diving and Salvage is handling the recovery of the vessel. Contractors have removed 400 gallons of fuel from tanks on the houseboat.

Clean up and salvage efforts continue, with the US Coast Guard and salvage crews working on the clean up.
