Seattle helps their offensive line, gets tackle Duane Brown from Houston

The Seattle Seahawks must have liked what they saw playing against Houston Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown on Sunday because they traded for him on Monday.

Brown, who had been holding out before Sunday’s game at Seattle and was one of the most vocal critics of owner Bob McNair’s controversial comments last week, was shipped to Seattle on Monday evening, according to multiple reports.

Brown didn’t come cheap. The Seahawks gave up cornerback Jeremy Lane, a 2018 fifth-round pick and a 2019 second-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Seahawks finally get some protection for Russell Wilson, who has done a remarkable job behind a shoddy line. On Sunday, the Seahawks could not block Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney in pass protection or when they tried to run the ball. With the trade deadline coming up and the line issues threatening to sabotage Seattle’s chances of winning a wide-open NFC, the Seahawks made a big move. Seattle already had a bad line, then lost left tackle George Fant to a leg injury in the preseason.

Getting Brown is a massive upgrade. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler and still a very good left tackle at age 32. He was unhappy with his contract with the Texans and his holdout didn’t fix that. His first game this season was Sunday. Brown’s unhappiness over his contract was probably the biggest reason he was shipped off, though the comments about being upset with McNair couldn’t have helped. It leaves rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson without his left tackle, but the Texans had played most of the season without Brown already.

The NFL’s trading deadline has become much more interesting in recent seasons, and the Seahawks made a big move Monday. Finally, Wilson might not be running for his life every time he drops back.
