Seasonal today ahead of unsettled close to workweek

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Wednesday, Utah — we are halfway through the workweek! After a cool start to the workweek, we’ll see our temperatures quickly rebound to seasonal norms this afternoon.

Northern Utah will see a mix of 60s and 70s while southern Utah will see highs in the 70s and 80s for most. The clouds in northern Utah this morning will gradually exit, resulting in partly cloudy skies this afternoon while southern Utah gets mostly sunny skies.

Our calm skies and seasonal temperatures won’t last too long though. A cold front is already approaching from the northwest. By this evening a few showers and storms can’t be ruled out in the northernmost part of our area. By tonight the cold front will move into northern Utah which will result in a slight chance of showers late tonight through the first half of tomorrow in northern Utah. By tomorrow afternoon we’ll be looking at mostly dry skies once again with temperatures that run about 10 degrees cooler in northern Utah from what we get today. Southern Utah will also be cooler, but instead of a 10-degree swing, it will be closer to a 2–5-degree swing.

Temperatures will moderate slightly as we round out the workweek and move into the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend. We will stay a little unsettled though as a couple of weak systems brush the state between Friday and Saturday. This will result in a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms in northern Utah as highs run a little below average. By Sunday, our systems will be moving away as high pressure builds in. From Memorial Day into next week, we’ll look at mostly dry conditions as temperatures begin to warm. By Monday, we’ll be above average with highs likely to run more than 5 degrees above average by Tuesday.
