Searcy School District hosts regional robotics competition, teams from 10 different states participate

SEARCY, Ark. – It’s a battle of the bots in White County this weekend.

The Searcy School District is hosting a regional FIRST Robotics Competition at Lion Arena.

Robotics SeaPerch challenge draws hundreds of students

Clayton Hass is a robotics programmer on one of Searcy High School’s teams. He says courses and challenges completed Thursday through Saturday aim to develop students’ skills in STEM so they can hopefully turn it into a career.

“Computer science, it’s getting bigger and bigger with AI and all sorts of jobs that are rising out of computers, and events like this and learning the engineering aspects and the programming and the robots,” Hass said. “I mean, learning this stuff is going to help you if you want to take up a job like that.”

Arkansas Tech University robotics team ranked best in US, top 2 in world

Over 30 teams have programmed, built, and are piloting their machines. 12 teams are from Arkansas. The other 18 teams are from 10 different states, the farthest team being from California. Other states represented include Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, and Arkansas.

Arkansas teams came from Alma, Booneville, Bentonville, Batesville, Hope, Texarkana, Viola, Searcy, Jonesboro, North Little Rock and Mountain Home.
