Search off Bahamas for 2 men from China missing after fishing trip; 2 others rescued
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- Authorities searched off the Bahamas on Monday for two men from China who apparently became lost in rough weather during a fishing trip.
Four men had set off in a kayak when the weather turned. Two decided to try to swim for land and were rescued before they reached shore, said Inspector Chrislyn Skippings, a spokeswoman for the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The U.S. Coast Guard and authorities from the nearby Turks and Caicos Islands were assisting the Bahamas with the search for the two missing men, Skippings said.
The men had set off about noon Sunday from Jaw's Beach on the western tip of New Providence, the island that includes Nassau, the capital.
Three of the four men on board the kayak, including one of the missing men, were employees of China State Construction working on the Baha Mar, a resort and casino complex that is being built and financed by the Chinese government along Cable Beach near Nassau, according to Pauline Yoshihashi, a project spokeswoman.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the two missing persons," Yoshihashi said. "As they are the subjects of extensive search-and-rescue efforts, we will have no further comment at this time."
