South Dakota winter wheat crop forecast at 29.7M bushels, down 51 percent from last year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting South Dakota's 2013 winter wheat crop to be down 51 percent from last year.

The department in its crop production report forecast the crop based on June 1 conditions at 29.7 million bushels, which is unchanged from the May 1 estimate.

The average yield is forecast at 33 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but down 17 bushels from last year.

Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 900,000 acres, unchanged from May 1 but down 26 percent from last year. That would be 72 percent of the planted acres.
