Scrivner’s wife’s statement redacted from restraining order petition

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The wife of Kern County Supervisor Zack Scrivner wrote five pages detailing why a domestic violence restraining order should be granted against her husband.

A copy of that document, filed in Superior Court on Wednesday, was almost entirely redacted when obtained by 17 News.

Other than containing her and her husband’s names, the length of their marriage (18 years and four months), and an opening and closing paragraph in which Christina Scrivner identifies herself as the petitioner and says her statement is “true and correct,” the rest of the document is covered in black permanent marker.

The order granting the redaction is confidential, court staff say, so the person who requested it can’t be identified. The order was signed by Judge Tanya Richard.

Other portions of the petition contain scant new information on the events of April 23, when law enforcement was called to the Scrivner home in Tehachapi.

Sheriff Donny Youngblood, in a press conference held two days later, said District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer called him to report Scrivner, her nephew, was armed and appeared to be having a psychotic episode.

Scrivner was disarmed before deputies arrived, the sheriff said, and had suffered stab wounds. Youngblood said deputies learned Scrivner had been involved in a physical altercation with his children over allegations he sexually abused a preteen.

As of Thursday, Scrivner had not been charged with a crime and was not listed in custody.

Scrivner has been a steady, influential presence on the political scene for 20 years

The state Attorney General’s Office said in an email it will review the matter due to the conflict of interest with the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Scrivner’s attorney, H.A. Sala, has said Scrivner would never harm his children and he believes the investigation will show no charges are warranted. The altercation leading to Scrivner being stabbed occurred during an effort to disarm him as he suffered a mental health crisis, he said.

Scrivner has been distraught since his wife filed for divorce in March, Sala said.

In the petition for the restraining order, Christina Scrivner says two guns were involved and all four of their children were home and either heard or saw what happened. She is seeking sole custody of the children and asking her husband be denied visitation.

She’s also asking he be ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from her, the children, their home, her workplace, vehicle and their children’s schools, according to the petition.

At the press conference, Youngblood said 30 guns, electronic devices and psychedelic mushrooms were seized from the home. He said forensic studies will determine whether Scrivner was impaired at the time.
