It was one out of 20 in the category of medium community hospitals, which groups facilities with 100 to 249 acute care beds that are not classified as a “teaching hospital.”

To come up with the list, which was sorted in alphabetical order rather than by ranking, the study gathered current performance data from the two most recent years as well as “trended performance” based on the most recent five years.

The list also looked at other factors including patient outcomes and financial, clinical and operational performance.

Sources included the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review patient claims, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Care Compare hospital performance and Hospital Cost Report Information System Medicare Cost Report.

Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas is one of four Scripps hospitals across five campuses in San Diego County. Scripps is the only health system in the region with two Level 1 trauma centers.
