Scranton police investigating South Side stabbing

Jul. 6—SCRANTON — City police are looking for a man after a stabbing Thursday afternoon in South Scranton.

Authorities received a call just after 3:30 p.m. for a man stabbed in the stomach at 1316 Prospect Ave., Lt. James Weaver said. After he was stabbed, the man, whom police did not identify, walked to Cherry Street and Pittston Avenue — about two blocks away — before being taken by ambulance to a hospital, Weaver said. His condition wasn't available Thursday night.

Police are looking for Waliek Shakur Vereen, 26, in connection with an aggravated assault Thursday in the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue, according to the department's Facebook page.

Crime-scene tape surrounded the home at 1316 Prospect Ave. and several neighboring buildings on the block to the corner of Prospect Avenue and Cherry Street.

Earlier that afternoon, an officer asked the Lackawanna County Emergency Communications Center to "contact Geisinger CMC, tell them to put a trauma alert ... critical patient, two stab wounds."

Neighbor Faith Wood and her husband, Michael Gevaras, heard arguing from the building Thursday. Wood didn't think much about it until a friend told her about the stabbing.

Gevaras was surprised to see a huge police presence next door. "I couldn't believe it," he said.

Wood said she's known the victim for less than a year, saying he is a "really good person."

"We hang and chill together," Wood said from her front porch. "I hope he's OK."

The investigation is ongoing, Weaver said, adding there is no danger to the public.

Police are asking anyone with information about Vereen to call 570-348-4139 or leave a tip at https://cityprotect.com/forms/scrantonpa.gov/anonymous?lang=en-US. They cautioned the public to not approach Vereen but to call 911 or 570-348-4141.
